Project Saenger II

Saenger II is a german shuttle project due to an idea of the space pioneer Eugen Saenger in 1942. The system consists of  2 stages with an total mass of 400 t:

The first stage is a supersonic aircraft with a length of 50 meters and has 6 engines. Each engine develops a thrust of 400 kN and the system is able to achieve supersonic in a few minutes.

The second stage HORUS (Hypersonic Orbital Research and Utilization System) which is installed on fuselage will be detached in a 30 km altitude and on a speed of Mach 6. Only HORUS with 2 astronauts and 4 tonnes payload will fly to outer space. The rocket engines burns about 6 t hydrogen an 30 t oxygen, and brings HORUS with a speed of 8 km/sec to an altitude of 80 km. End point is an earth orbit in 400 km.

The first stage returns to the starting point, also HORUS lands after fulflilling its mission on earth, and can be used for further missions. For bigger payloads to 10 t there is an unmanned second stage CARGUS available. CARGUS cannot be used once more and is lost after the mission.
